Beaumont, Texas — Gay travelers across the United States have the right to review their travel arrangements and get compensation if the accommodations they select are not acceptable to them.
The decision came out of the Department of Transportation’s Office of Civil Rights, which has been working to change discrimination laws in the country.
It is also a step in the right direction for LGBTQ Americans.
“We have a right to be free from discrimination and we have a duty to protect that right,” said Jennifer Williams, director of the LGBTQ Rights Project at the Center for American Progress Action Fund.
“This ruling is a significant step toward ensuring that LGBTQ Americans have equal access to accommodations and accommodations that are in keeping with their identity.”
The ruling will go into effect in September 2018.
